Is design considered a commodity as opposed to a necessity?

As a graphic designer who’s been in the game for a while, I've had countless conversations with clients about the value and need for strong, consistent, and relevant design.

I find it quite strange that businesses often see design as a commodity when it's a solution to a problem and aligns with the need to market oneself. It’s not just a "nice to have," it's a "need to have."

In today's world, we rely heavily on visual cues to make decisions and design plays a crucial role in this process.

Let's not forget that the world we live in wouldn't function without it. Advertising and marketing efforts are pushed to the forefront of our consciousness through design.

From my perspective, it's not that design is becoming a commodity, but rather people view it as one.

As designers, we strive to constantly improve ourselves to generate greater work that is considered and aligned to the business we are working with. To combat commodification, we use our skills and creativity to sell our work. If what we offer is worth every dollar, then lower prices shouldn't need to be used as a selling point.

Design changes perceptions. Therefore, in my view, it is a necessity, not a commodity.
